President Obama had been pushing for this piece of legislation while in congress as well as when he was running for president. On Obama’s first day in office he signed the piece of legislation that makes it easier for U.S. workers to win pay-discrimination lawsuits. U.S. labor laws have always been an issue and now that President Obama has taken office he is making the changes necessary to equal the playing field for not just women, but families as a whole. President Obama’s move clearly shows that he is trying to make the economy work for everyone, including those who have seen shortages of wages, unpaid overtime, as well as discrimination in the workplace. This new legislation allows workers who have issues with their labor lawsuits from years earlier to be able to take them to court. Formerly, U.S. labor laws disallowed former instances to be taken up in the court system. This new piece of legislation equals labor so that all have the ability to attest to issued that have negatively affected them. Labor rights and women’s activists are especially thankful for the new legislation because it enables them to bring up suit for acts against them that happened in the past. The 1965 Civil Rights Act is what has held many lawsuits back because it disallows any lawsuit that is over 180 days old. Needless to say this is a step in the right direction in terms of U.S. Labor laws.
